Alley Cropping in the
Pacific Northwest
Raising Cane Ranch | Western SARE
With many ecological benefits associated with alley cropping, Nick Pate, from Raising Cane Ranch in Snohomish, Washington, is researching the environmental and economic outcomes of planting apple trees in his hay field. By introducing the vertical element of apple trees to his hay production, he hopes to increase soil microbiology, water retention, wildlife habitat, and overall biodiversity, all while expanding his cider production.
Watch as Nick shares the results and experiences of his Western SARE-funded research project.
